A Polynesian turtle carved in Tou wood
This Polynesian turtle sculpture is carved from Pacific walnut, known in French Polynesia as Tou. At 20.5 in (52 cm) long and 12.6 in (32 cm) wide, its generous proportions allow the shape of the shell, flippers and body to be fully expressed.
The natural grain and tonal variations of the wood are an important part of the piece. Rather than hiding the character of the Tou, the carving allows the wood itself to remain visible and contribute to the overall design.
The turtle in Polynesian art
When it comes to Polynesian sculpture, marine life has long provided some of its most recognizable forms. The turtle is particularly well suited to carving, with a broad shell that allows for detail and sweeping flippers that bring movement to the piece.
Its rounded silhouette and warm wooden tones give this sculpture enough presence to stand on its own on a console, coffee table, sideboard or display surface.
Inspired by the marine life of the Pacific
Turtles, rays, sharks and fish are recurring subjects among Polynesian animal sculptures, reflecting the close visual connection between island culture and the surrounding ocean.
At 5.3 lb (2.410 kg) and 5.1 in (13 cm) high, this piece has a substantial feel without becoming overly bulky, making it easy to display in both residential and hospitality interiors.
Tou wood gives each piece its own character
The material has a major influence on the final appearance of a sculpture. A stone turtle sculpture, for example, has a darker, denser and more mineral presence, while Tou brings warm tones, visible grain and a softer, more organic character.
Because every piece of wood has its own grain and natural variations, those differences become part of the sculpture rather than imperfections, giving each piece its own individual character.
