There are materials that precede everything else. Before craftsmen, before tools, even before the first inhabitants of the Marquesas, this rock was formed.

2.9 million years ago, intense volcanic activity produced a garnet phonolite on the island of Ua-Pou that is found in only two places on the planet: in the Hohoi Valley in the Marquesas, and in Brazil.

The garnet crystals degraded in the dark matrix form patterns on the surface that resemble flowers, Te ke’a pua in Marquesan, the flower stone. It is from this rare rock, extracted in the Marquesas and carved on site, that this manta ray takes shape.

For those interested in how Polynesian volcanic stone is transformed into sculpture, the volcanic stone tiki from Moorea explores the same raw material from a different perspective.

The manta ray occupies a special place in the Polynesian imagination. Graceful, silent, capable of diving and rising to the surface with apparent ease, it embodies a form of aquatic freedom that Marquesan sculptors have always sought to capture.

Here, the shape of the ray naturally follows the geology of the stone: its broad wings, central line, and slightly curved edges follow the grain of the phonolite as if the figure were already there, waiting to be revealed.

Flowered stone from the Marquesas: what the rock says even before it is carved

Working on the manta ray sculpture in Ua-Pou flower stone is an exercise in extreme patience. Garnet phonolite is one of the most brittle rocks that Marquesan artisans work with.

Every stroke of the tool is calculated, every polishing pass meticulous, because a mistake on this material cannot be corrected. The final result is polished by hand, sometimes finished with monoi oil to accentuate the black floral patterns that appear on the surface.

It is these dark inclusions, these mineral flowers frozen for millions of years, that make each piece irreplaceable: no pattern is repeated, no line resembles another.

To explore other expressions of Marquesan sculpture in noble materials, the Marquesan mask in Pacific walnut bears the same heritage of craftsmanship and territory.
