Tahitian Pareo ‘Aute Vairaumati Hand-Painted

37,00

In Polynesian mythology, Vairaumati was the most beautiful woman of her time, the one chosen by the god Oro above all others. Her name remains associated with this idea of natural grace and effortless beauty.

On this Tahitian pareo, purple hibiscus and white tiare flowers convey this same softness, set against a white background with the lightness of Moorea flowers when they open in the morning.

This Polynesian femininity is also found in Polynesian tiare flowers for the hair, a simple and universal gesture of island women.

‘Aute, in Reo Tahiti, means hibiscus. The flower that is tucked behind the left ear when one is free to love. On this Polynesian pareo, it blooms in soft purple, framed by a mauve border that gives it coherence, the unity of a piece designed from start to finish.

Hand-Painted Purple Pareo – Handcrafted in Moorea, French Polynesia

This purple wasn’t made by a machine. It was brushed on by hand, stroke by stroke, directly onto soft cotton voile, in a small studio facing the lagoon. No stencil, no mass production: each pareo absorbs the color in its own way, holds its own pockets of intensity, its own lighter passages. That’s what gives it life.

The shade is soft, floral, luminous, a purple that shifts with the light, warming in the sun and deepening in the shade. Tied over a swimsuit, wrapped as a skirt, or draped over the shoulders, it carries that slightly unpredictable quality that only the human hand can create. The same singularity you’ll find in our Polynesian engraved mother-of-pearl bracelets, never quite the same, never quite identical.

This pareo is part of our collection of hand-painted Polynesian textiles, lightweight pieces made for travel, warm weather, and the days when you want to wear something with a story behind it.
