Child of the Sea
A young face emerges from a reef filled with coral, fish and marine life. Rather than placing the ocean behind the portrait, the artist brings both together until the child appears to belong to the underwater world itself.
The composition is drawn in ink on paper, with fine black lines creating a striking contrast against the dark background. Coral rises around the figure while fish move through the scene, giving the artwork a sense of life without overwhelming the simplicity of the drawing.
Created by an artist based in Moorea, Child of the Sea reflects the close relationship between island life, the lagoon and the reef. Nature and the ocean remain a powerful source of inspiration throughout contemporary Polynesian art, but here that connection is expressed through a particularly intimate portrait.
Ink, wood and depth
This is not a conventional framed illustration. The artwork is set inside a handcrafted wooden shadow box, giving the composition 7 cm of physical depth.
The dark wood frames the pale paper and detailed ink work while creating space around the drawing. From different angles, light moves across the interior of the box and subtly changes the way the reef and central figure stand out.
The ocean takes on a more symbolic role in another original Polynesian artwork, Guardian of the Ocean, where a female figure is surrounded by whales and marine life. Here, the relationship feels more personal: the child is not simply looking at the underwater world, but appears to be part of it.
Original art from Moorea
Child of the Sea is a one-of-a-kind original. Only one piece exists. It is not a print, reproduction or numbered edition.
The ink drawing and handcrafted wooden shadow box form a single complete work, created for collectors and anyone looking for original art from French Polynesia rather than mass-produced island decor.
