Layered Polynesian Art – Between Mother and Earth

Between Mother and Earth

A whale moves alongside her calf, surrounded by tropical flowers and leaves. At first, the scene feels peaceful and simple. Look a little closer, and the title begins to reveal another layer of meaning.

Between Mother and Earth plays with two ideas of nurture: the flower sustained by the earth, and the calf moving beside its mother. The artwork brings those two relationships together, connecting land, ocean and motherhood within the same composition.

That connection between people, nature and the sea is a recurring theme in contemporary Polynesian art, where island life is often expressed through much more than traditional carving alone.

Built around depth, not just drawing

The artwork is created in ink on paper and presented inside a handcrafted wooden shadow box. Its 7 cm depth gives the composition room to breathe, turning the drawing into something closer to a small visual scene than a conventional framed print.

The dark wood creates a strong contrast with the white paper and fine linework. As the light changes, the space inside the box becomes part of the artwork, giving the whales, flowers and surrounding forms a different presence throughout the day.

The idea of protection remains at the heart of this piece. Here, it appears through the bond between a mother whale and her calf, giving this Tahitian artwork a softer and more intimate reading centered on care, connection and the natural world.

One original piece

“Between Mother and Earth” is a one-of-a-kind artwork. There is no second copy, no numbered edition and no mass-produced version.

The ink drawing and handcrafted wooden box are presented as one complete work, created for collectors and interiors where originality matters more than repetition.
