Hand-Painted Tahitian Mā’ohi Pareo

37,00

Mā’ohi is the name Polynesians give themselves. It is not a word for tourists, nor is it a geographical name. An identity. On this Tahitian pareo, this identity takes the form of an orange circular tattoo symbol, placed at the heart of an abstract plant composition, between the monstera leaf and the dark green areas, like a seal affixed to the Mā’ohi culture.

Polynesian carved tiki carry the same symbolic meaning, that of a people who engrave their history in matter.

This Polynesian pareo contrasts with the usual floral compositions. Here, there are no tiare or hibiscus flowers. The vegetation is dense, graphic, almost abstract.
The turquoise green background, the touches of lime yellow and orange, the large dark leaf that occupies the space: everything speaks of the tropical forest of Moorea, seen from the inside.

When Polynesian tattoos become textiles

What sets a hand-painted Tahitian pareo apart is the absence of templates, reproductions, or mass production. The colors are applied by hand directly onto the cotton fabric in Moorea, French Polynesia, and each piece is unique. No two pieces are ever exactly alike, just like Polynesian tapa, which come out of the same workshop but each have their own character.
